A little while ago, I had a go at writing some language targets for EAL learners that I hoped were pupil-friendly enough for the majority of learners to understand and take ownership of. For the writing targets, I simplified the language in a similar document from the Secondary Strategy’s Ensuring the attainment of more advanced learners of EAL; the attached strategies are unchanged from the original. For reading, I made a lot of use of some non-EAL specific targets from Lancashire’s Literacy team; I bear sole responsibility for the strategies on this one. We often recommend that these are best used within an Individual Language Plan (ILP), which would be something like the language development equivalent of an IEP. Our very simple ILP template is here:
