Next year, as you know, schools will need to report on fluency levels of pupils whose first language is not English on school census.

Wiltshire EMAS are offering four workshops running in July to help with this - please see wiltscpd.co.uk for booking.

To help with assessment of English fluency, we've converted our regular tracking materials to fit the new DfE descriptors. There are grids for Speaking and Listening, Reading, and Writing, with observable outcomes for each level on the left, and suggested strategies to help the learner move to the next level on the right. It's designed to be as user-friendly as possible - hopefully an additional adult who knew the child well would be able to use it easily. Download here:

We've also updated our tracking grids to help you check whether a learner is on course to "catch up" in English in 5, 7 or 10 years of English medium education. Take this document with a giant pinch of salt - while the original BASS documents on which we based this idea relied on some detailed research, the paths laid out on these documents are, for the moment, based on nothing more than our judgement. We're doing some informal, small scale testing of them at the moment (and they seem to be working) but they don't have the force of proper research evidence behind them, at least for the moment.
