I recently took the vocabulary checklists from ‘Planning support for the new Mathematics National Curriculum’ and ran them through some software to check which words were from families that occur more infrequently in British English. The rationale for this was that it might help teachers anticipate which words pupils were less likely to have encountered before. Many of these are highly subject-specific, but some (hollow, noon) are perhaps a little more surprising. Of course, this doesn't flag up common words that have a different meaning in the context of Maths (such as "face".) The results are below:
